How to Prepare for a Doctor’s Visit: A Simple Checklist
Have you ever left a doctor’s appointment thinking, “I forgot to ask about that”? You are not alone. Between explaining symptoms and remembering instructions, it is easy to overlook something important.
A little preparation can help you feel more confident and make the most of your visit. Start with these six steps.
- Write down your top three concerns
What do you most want help with? List your questions and bring up your biggest concern first. If you have symptoms, note when they started, how often they happen, and how they affect your day. - Bring your medicine list
Include prescriptions, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and supplements, along with doses and how often you take them. Note allergies, side effects, and any trouble taking or paying for medicines. - Plan ahead
Confirm the location, arrival time, and paperwork you need. Ask about preparation for planned tests rather than guessing about fasting or changing medicines. Request an interpreter in advance if needed. - Consider bringing someone you trust
A friend or family member can take notes and help you remember questions. Let them know how you want them to help. You can also ask for private time with your doctor - Speak up and ask questions
If something is unclear, say so. Try asking: “What is this test for?” “What are my options?” or “Can you explain that in simpler terms?”
Mention anything that could make the care plan difficult to follow.
- Leave knowing your next steps
Before leaving, repeat the plan in your own words. Confirm medicine changes, follow-up appointments, and how and when you will receive test results. Ask whom to contact with questions.
You do not need to prepare perfectly. Start with your questions, your medicine list, and a willingness to speak up.
